Copyright Application

Copyright application forms are papers that need to be filled out in order to apply to the United States Copyright office, these papers need to be filled out correctly in order to have your copyright for your work approved.

These copyright forms are available for the person who wishes to apply for a copyright online at many websites including the U.S. Copyright Office or of course by requesting the copyright application either by mail or by telephone.

On these forms are the usual questions that many forms ask such as name and address, and then there are other questions such as the title of the work to be copyrighted. If the work has been named prior this first name must also be placed on the copyright application. Also if it was published prior to the copyright application in a magazine or periodical this name, volume, issue date and page numbers must be placed on the application.

The name of the author, and coauthors, the authors nationality date of birth and if this is a work being copyrighted by a coauthor or a family member the date of death of the author also needs to be placed on the application. The contribution to the work must also be answered on this copyright application form.

The nature of the work to be copyrighted also must be placed on the copyright application, this means to describe the work in brief terms.

The years that the work was created and the date and nation if the work has ever been published before, and the copyright claimants, the writers name and address is to be given or if the copyright application is being applied for a another person.

There is a section that must be filled out in the case that the work has been compiled from other works and the other works that it is compiled from must also be listed. Then what was added to the previous works and how the new work has changed these works.

There are copyright applications that are made for other types of work that needs copyright protection, such as music or sound recordings and visual arts. There is also copyright applications that are for what is termed serials, these are newspapers, magazines, newsletters, annuals publications and other types of these materials.

Copyright Applications that are not filled out correctly are not processed and in most cases they are sent back to the person who had applied and must be corrected before the U.S. Copyright Office will accept the copyright application and process it so that the work may be copyrighted.
